Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy supports children to take part in the everyday activities that matter to them — playing, learning, eating, dressing and joining in with family routines. Support is provided within the professional’s scope of practice.

Who may benefit

  • Children who find activities such as holding a pencil, using scissors or managing buttons challenging.
  • Children who respond strongly to — or seek out — certain sounds, textures or movement.
  • Children who would benefit from support with self-care and daily routines.

What the service focuses on

  • Fine motor skills and hand use.
  • Sensory processing and regulation strategies.
  • Daily living activities such as dressing, eating and self-care.
  • Participation in play, learning and family routines.

What an initial session may involve

  • Discussing your child’s daily routines and the activities your family would like support with.
  • Observing your child during play and functional activities.
  • Talking through initial observations and possible goals.

How parents can participate

  • Parents learn strategies that can be built into everyday routines at home.
  • You are encouraged to share what you notice between sessions.
  • Goals are discussed together and reviewed over time.

Every child is unique, and children respond to support in different ways. Recommendations depend on an individual assessment and the professional’s judgement; no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
