Speech and Language Therapy

Communication is more than words. Speech and language therapy supports how children understand others, express their needs and ideas, and connect with the people around them — in whatever ways work best for them.

Who may benefit

  • Children who find it hard to follow instructions or understand conversations.
  • Children who would benefit from support with social communication.

What the service focuses on

  • Receptive language — understanding words, sentences and routines.
  • Expressive language — vocabulary, sentence building and storytelling.
  • Speech sounds and clarity.
  • Social communication and turn-taking.
  • Practical communication strategies for everyday situations.

What an initial session may involve

  • Talking with you about your child’s communication at home and in other settings.
  • Play-based activities to observe how your child understands and communicates.
  • Sharing initial observations and discussing whether therapy, and which approach, may be appropriate.

How parents can participate

  • Parents may observe or join activities where appropriate.
  • You will be shown simple, practical ways to support communication during daily routines.
  • Regular conversations help us adjust goals to what matters to your family.

Every child is unique, and children respond to support in different ways. Recommendations depend on an individual assessment and the professional’s judgement; no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
